bracing & cabling
Trees most often fail during severe weather conditions such as high winds, storms or heavy snow. These failures usually occur in the weakest areas of the tree’s architecture such as an existing crack, a branch union with included bark, or overextended and heavy limbs. The use of tree support systems, such as bracing and cabling can help extend the life of a tree by reducing the risk of failure.

Bracing through the use of a threaded rod or bolt that is inserted through a cracked stem or at a weak union helps stabilize the area, while a cable that is installed higher in the canopy either supports the weight of a limb or limit’s its movement in severe weather. Whenever possible a support system should be used in conjunction with pruning in a effort to reduce weight bearing or wind loading of the tree parts in question.
